History of Toland Adobe

We have been told by old time residents of Bisbee that is one of the oldest houses in the historical district. Indeed, the adobe part of the home (bedroom, study, bath) is a rarity. Old photos show structures on the site from the late 1880s, and the adobe building is shown on a 1904 map.

Toland Adobe and environs (School Hill) around 1888

The earliest county record we found shows the adobe in existance on January 10th 1903, when J.H. Jack, a 46 year old lumber merchant sold it to J.T. Toland, a 28 year old miner for the Calumet & Arizona Mine. The city directories of 1914-15-17-18 show J.T. Toland's address as, rear 85 School Hill. We found the notation '85 on the original townsite map for 39A Shearer.

Jesse and Margaret, his wife, lived here and in 1914 added the other rooms which changed the style to 'territorial'.

Jesse is listed on the 1898 'Muster Out Roll' of Roosevelt's Rough Riders as a Trooper. His name is also on the dedication stone for the Bisbee historical district town park of 1917 as town alderman. The last record of J.T. is the Bisbee town directory of 1940 when he was 65 years of age. He was born in California. We found no other information about Margaret nor any children.
